Field Notes III

Before class on Wednesday, please post your final set of fieldnotes here to our course blog as a comment. Make sure and include the same kind of information as in previous fieldnotes. In this final set of notes, though, you might try and sketch out any tentative conclusions you are making about this space and its significance for the people who use it.

    Monday 3:30
    70ish degrees, sunny

I used Monday as a day to take my own pictures, until my camera died and the weather seemed as if it was turning unpleasant.

    -Blake Street, 16th to 20th
People taking pictures of the stadium
    Restaurants mostly empty
A lot of street parking available
People split between business and casual wear
Wide range of parked cars in quality
Man walking out of Falling Rock Tap House:
“Well don’t just take a picture. Go in and have a beer.” “They have like 50 beers on tap if you’re into beer.”
Man walking to lunch after seeing me take a picture of Blues on Blake:
“You don’t want that place, it’s a real dive. No restaurant will survive there.”

    -Wazee Street
    Man at Bd’s with woman:
“I like the beard man. Nice work.”

    Time: 9:00 – 10:00 am
    Location: Jazzman's Cafe
*Arriving I notice a larger than normal populace occupying the Cafe.

9:00 – The tables are very occupied and there is a rush of students leaving who are most probably late for class. There is only one person currently behind the counter as opposed to the normal two. The majority of students are purchasing coffee, while employees who work at Driscoll are purchasing food as well.

9:05 – There are a few people that are ill and one guy is sneezing over the place without covering his nose. The noise levels have dropped in the past 5 minutes as most of the people left here are sitting quietly or working on school work.

9:40 – Not much happening in the past 30 minutes as most people are in class. A few new people walk in and chat with the employees about how they're doing and a few students leave. A group is forming outside, perhaps they have a meeting in the auditorium next to Jazzman's.

9:45 – Crowds are starting to trickle in, mainly people coming from Sturm. Lines start forming and there's a noticeable lack of "awakeness" amongst the students, space is starting to run out. The fast majority of customers so far this morning have been females along with the fast majority of people who are leaving after having been here for 40 minutes studying. I overhear one group saying they're moving to the library.

9:55 – The cafe is getting very crowded, I count three people returning for coffee that were here just one hour ago. Mainly new faces and the employees seem less enthusiastic as they were an hour ago. There are two employees manning the counter and one going to and from the counter and storage room refilling supplies.

Neiman Marcus, Cherry Creak Mall, Denver, CO

I’m here today on a Sunday in hopes that the mall will be more busy. There are definitely more people in the store and the employees are working more with customers than they were during the week. The store is still impeccably clean which is impressive considering the amount of traffic. I stuck to interviewing just customers today because the employees were busy. I received similar answers as I did last week so I decided I wanted to interview people I know personally to get their opinions. I asked the friends I was with the same questions I asked the strangers. I received much more honest responses that fully elaborated on the subjects that the strangers hinted at. When I returned to campus I asked a few more people to receive as many opinions as possible. Overall I am starting to get a feel for the main topics that seem to be reoccurring and the most important aspects of the store. I am starting to understand the sub-culture of the people shopping in the store, now I have to relate it to why it is important to have this understanding. I am going to look for scholarly sources that may give me further incite on this subject.
